Fall 2011 Update!

A lot has happened since my last post!

First of all, this summer I interned with the Vertebrate Paleontology Department at the Natural History Museum. It was an amazing experience. I did illustrations of skulls, and I worked on a reconstruction of a Woolly Rhino. The latter project was especially exciting, because it was of 1) a recently discovered species, 2) the oldest woolly rhino ever discovered, and 3) it's depicting a rather unique woolly rhino behavior. It appeared in many major news sources, including the Science, the LA Times, and ABC News. I did not expect to see it in so many places, so that was a pleasant surprise for an already rewarding project.

In late September, I went to Dunedin, New Zealand, for an internship at the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre. So far, I've done a couple octopus illustrations, and am working on a game. This has been a wonderful experience, and I'm said that I'll be leaving New Zealand in three weeks.

I'm working on a couple other projects, and hope to post those when I'm done! You can visit my Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Julie-Naylor/117852418297108 to see more of my recent work!

It's been a while!

After a yearlong hiatus, I'm back! Life has been a bit crazy lately, and a lot has happened.
School has been wonderful. It's been a lot of work, a lot of stress, but more than anything, rewarding. I've learned a lot, and continue to learn and improve. This program has been a life changing experience for me.
More news: I've launched my website! It's jnaylorillustration.com. The website is still under construction, but you can view some of my more recent work. I will keep updating it and improving it as time goes on.
Last bit of news, this Friday is the opening reception for Cal State Monterey Bay's Illustrating Nature show! You'll see the work done by our class, and it's really some gorgeous work. It's been an enriching experience being among such talented individuals. The show will be up from May 7-June 4 at the Pacific Grove Natural History Museum.
Just for fun, here's one of my recently completed pieces. It's the life of Torosaurus, done in coquille and colored in with Photoshop.
Adios for now, I have a date with some illustrator line work!

Cal State Monterey Bay

When I created this site, I expressed the fact that my goal was to receive official training in Scientific Illustration, and over the next year to continue to improve the quality of my work. Last year, I applied to Cal State Monterey Bay's Scientific Illustration program, a prestigious program unique in the country, which only accepts fifteen people annually. Unfortunately, I did not get in, but was an Alternate. I am happy to say that this year I have been accepted. The program begins in September. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity. I will get to receive official training, to stretch and grow as an artist, and live in a location outside of my LA home base (something I've never done). I will continue to post my work; expect to see more good stuff this summer!
